In a reversal by Walker, he acknowledged that Biden won the 2020 election although he didn’t distance himself entirely from the former president, referring to Donald Trump as “ my friend” and offering support for his 2024 election run. Christian Walker, Herschel Walker’s son with his wife, who previously advocated for Walker’s Senate run, took to Twitter with some “fatherly” advice: “ Wear a condom, damn.” The hypocritical news exploded for a second time when it was revealed that he actually urged the same woman to get the procedure again in 2011 but the woman refused. The former football star previously likened abortions to “ a woman killling her baby”-despite the evidence that he paid for a woman to get the procedure in 2009. Warnock retorted, “God gave us a choice and I respect the right of women to make a decision,” adding that Walker “wants to arrogate more power to politicians than God has.” Then Kondo came out to take some deserved applause of his own.Walker inquired about Warnock’s pro-abortion stance as a pastor: “Instead of aborting those babies, why aren’t you baptizing those babies?” In the end the models and some dancers who joined at the close performed a joyful honor guard for Miyake-a traditional display of the garments’ wearability-running hither and thither across the large darkened space before rushing as one towards the exit. You could see the sculpture reference but also half expected these to be props in a coup de theatre that never arrived. The models walked between two fabric obelisks, lit from within. These had that trademark Miyake bounce and flex-they looked both structured and effortless simultaneously. From around Look 40 onwards, a group called Assemblage used different knitting techniques to create dresses, skirts and tops in tiered sections. A 100-percent-fossil-fuel-free polyester? This was a truly exciting development. These “Resonant Suit” looks were made in a circularly-pleated polyester that was 100 percent plant based and created by a Miyake partner named Toray Industries Inc. Possibly the most technologically significant section came from around Look 20. Some of these were impressed with pigment prints intended to reinforce that sculptural look. The collection was loosely based around sculpture and the opening section, Torso, was crafted in single pieces of fabric manufactured to look solid to the eye-like a piece of carved marble-but to move fluidly against the body. Team Miyake tends to deliver its looks in groups, like different courses in a tasting menu, each focusing on its various avenues of seasonal exploration. Satoshi Kondo and the design team, who had worked closely with Miyake until the end, provided a quote of their own: “We see design as a process driven by curiosity, built upon a comprehensive exploration-bringing joy, wonder, and hope to life, and of course with a touch of playfulness.” This collection, named A Form That Breathes, was evidence that Miyake’s unparalleled application of technological innovation in the pursuit of joyfulness through design was in safe hands. Once the applause had faded we were left looking ahead. Design evokes surprise and joy in people.” Under images of the great man’s portrait that were projected around us at the Paris Event Center was written one of his many quotes, which, like so many of his garments, was deceptively simple: “I believe there is hope in design. This first Issey Miyake show since the founder’s death in August was preceded by a moment of remembrance. Technologies must be operated and maintained in accordance with Federal and Department security and In response to complaints, AVG announced that as of 9 July 2008 "Search-Shield will no longer scan each search result online for new exploits, which was causing the spikes that webmasters addressed with us", releasing a new build on that date that applies a local blacklist, then prefetches and scans only those links clicked on by the user. AVG Online Shield also ensures the safety of exchanging files via instant messengers and VoIP clients. AVG Online ShieldĪVG Online Shield is a feature designed to check files and ensure that they are safe. Pay-per-click advertising was not affected by the increase in traffic. AVG initially said that site administrators would be able to filter the LinkScanner traffic out of their site statistics, leaving the problem of excess bandwidth usage still to be solved. The prescanning of every link in search results also caused websites to transfer more data than usual, resulting in higher bandwidth usage for web site operators and slow performance for users. Since LinkScanner disguises the scans as coming from an Internet Explorer 6 browser when it prescans each site listed in the search results, website usage logs showed incorrect and overinflated site visitor statistics. When AVG 8.0 was first released, its LinkScanner safe search feature was shown to cause an increase in traffic on websites that appear high in search engine results pages. Concerns regarding web analytics have made LinkScanner a controversial component (see "LinkScanner concerns" below). LinkScanner includes: Search-Shield – a safe search component that places safety ratings next to each link in Google, Yahoo! and MSN search results plus Active Surf-Shield – a safe surf component that scans the contents of a web site in real-time to ensure it's safe being opened. The patent pending LinkScanner technology acquired from Exploit Prevention Labs and built into most AVG products, provides real-time updated protection against exploits and drive-by downloads. FeaturesĪVG features most of the common functions available in modern antivirus and Internet security programs, including periodic scans, scans of sent and received emails (including adding footers to the emails indicating this), the ability to repair some virus-infected files, and a quarantine area (virus vault) in which infected files are held. New versions require Windows 7 or later virus definitions are still provided for previous versions. All are freemium products: They are free to download, install, update and use, but for technical support a premium plan must be purchased.ĪVG stopped providing new features for Windows XP and Windows Vista in January 2019. Platform supportĪVG provides AVG AntiVirus Free for Windows, AVG AntiVirus for Mac for macOS and AVG AntiVirus for Android for Android devices. On 7 July 2016, Avast announced an agreement to acquire AVG for $1.3 billion. Īccording to AVG Technologies, the company has more than 200 million active users worldwide, including more than 100 million who use their products and services on mobile devices. This software was incorporated into the AVG security product range in March 2009. In January 2009, AVG Technologies acquired Sana Security, a developer of identity theft prevention software. AVG Technologies acquired Exploit Prevention Labs (XPL) in December 2007 and incorporated that company's LinkScanner safe search and surf technology into the AVG 8.0 security product range released in March 2008. In 2006, the AVG security package grew to include anti-spyware as AVG Technologies acquired ewido Networks, an anti-spyware group. The AVG Free Edition helped raise awareness of the AVG product line. In 1997, the first AVG licenses were sold in Germany and the UK. The brand AVG comes from Grisoft's first product, Anti-Virus Guard, launched in 1992 in the Czech Republic. They reorganized their in-house Amazon Game Studios (originally established to create mobile games for their proprietary Appstore) and set their sights on the triple-A side of the gaming industry. And this expansion will include all of the base game content and so much more. Despite its hitches and flaws, Elite Dangerous accomplishes precisely what it set out to do. If it sounds too good to be true, I simply point you back to the base game. And you can do all this with other Elite Dangerous players from around the world. You’ll be able to land on planets, meet NPCs, fulfill new contracts, and become the gunslingin’ Han Solo archetype you always wanted to be. This new chapter in the Elite Dangerous saga will get you out of your starship and onto these wild worlds across the galaxy. But for all this freedom, there was one thing Elite Dangerous didn’t allow - and that was for you to set foot on these brave new worlds. Start your own mining business, tapping into asteroids for precious metals and other intergalactic matter. Take up piracy, raiding shipping lanes populated by NPCs and other players trying to make an honest living. When the Milky Galaxy is at your beck and call, where do you start? The simple answer: wherever you want.īecome a trader, shuttling goods and materials between space stations and planetary colonies spinning out there in the black. While they leaned heavily on procedural generation to pull it off, nearly every star can be visited, and many sport their own solar systems for you to explore. It’s the spacefaring MMORPG of your wildest Star Wars and Star Trek dreams. That’s what Frontier Developments set out to do with Elite Dangerous. Now, imagine a bunch of developers in a board room saying, “Yeah, let’s make all that.” Simply conceptualizing that much space taxes our limited cognitive abilities to their utmost limits. And every one of its celestial brethren could form the heart of another solar system in turn - each with its own planets, planetoids, and smaller stars in orbit. The star we call the Sun at the heart of our solar system is just one among an awesome multitude. It measures as much as two-hundred thousand lightyears from edge to edge, an area filled with hundreds of billions of stars. Despite what science fiction may lead you to believe, it’s unfathomably big. Website: Imagine, if you will, the galaxy we call home: the Milky Way. b) Elements with high ionization energies tend to have large atomic radii. The atomic radius of an argon atom is slightly smaller than the ionic radius of the chloride ion, and so on. Of the 3 elements fluorine, bromine, and calcium, which has the highest and. For example, the atomic radius of a neon atom is slightly smaller than the ionic radius of the fluoride ion (\(F^\)). Thus the electrons in the noble gas atoms are drawn slightly closer to the nucleus despite repulsive forces between the electrons. Thus more space is required for all of the electrons to exist in the same ion, so they spread out, thus increasing the atomic radius of the atom as it becomes a halide ion.Ĭompared to the noble gas atoms, the halide ions have slightly bigger radii because the noble gas atoms have one more proton than the halide ions in the same period. Since potassium is located at the start of period 3, and bromine at the end of the same period, potassium will have a. Is Bromine the largest atomic radius Let’s use these trends to try and figure out which atom would have the largest radius. Its properties are intermediate between those of chlorine and iodine. Therefore, the three elements ranked from smallest to largest atomic radius would be F < Br < Ca. It is the third-lightest halogen and is a volatile red-brown liquid at room temperature that evaporates readily to form a similarly coloured vapour. The atomic radius of a chemical element is a measure of the distance out to which the electron cloud extends from the nucleus. This same pattern holds for all of the groups in the periodic table.īut what about the case where a halogen atom acquires an additional electron and a full octet? Well, that is one more electron that is thrown into the mix in the heap of repulsive forces occuring between all of the electrons. Bromine is a chemical element with the symbol Br and atomic number 35. Since potassium is located at the start of period 3, and bromine at the end of the same period, potassium will have a larger atomic radius than bromine, and thus the largest atomic radius of the four given atoms. Thus the atomic radii of the halogens is, in increasing order:įluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, Asatine Likewise, bromine will have a larger atomic radius when compared with chlorine. The halogens in higher periods have greater atomic radii because there are more energy levels' worth of electrons in the atoms with more protons. the average radius for bromine is 115 pm, its atomic radius or bohr radius is 94 pm, its covalent radius is 114 pm, and its van der waals radius is 185 pm. I hope it helped somehow! (I’m still studying this topic for an exam next week)Every halogen atom has an average atomic radius determined by the attractive forces between protons and electrons, the repulsive forces between particles of the same charge. It has one more shell than sulphur so its outer electrons experience more shielding from the inner electrons, so they are less attracted in the nucleus and more likely to be lost. Bromine is a chemical element with atomic number 35 which means there are 35 protons in its nucleus.
Every turn, players draw up to a hand of five cards, of which they play three cards. By making the board bigger or tweaking the course so it’s more curvy, the creators could have made the circles bigger so that the ships could all fit better.ĭespite the mixture of three different game mechanics, Extraordinary Adventures: Pirates is really simple to pick up and play. Each space can only fit one ship, and since players can share spaces the other ships have to be pushed off, and then when the first ship moves the players can become confused as they are now left with a ship that isn’t on a space. The spaces on the three tracks where the ships and cargo cubes are supposed to go are simply too small. Furthermore, the tiles used for the treasure that players can get throughout the game are thick and big enough that it’s easy to see what’s on them.Īll of this being said, there is one problem with the components of this game, and that’s the board. The cargo cubes are exceptionally well made, and they look astounding. Each player’s pirates look different from the other players, and while the ships all look the same they are very sturdy and easy to handle. That being said, the plastic ships, pirates, and cargo cubes are all wonderfully made. The base game has wooden tokens for the pirates, cargo, and ships, while the kickstarter game has plastic miniatures and cubes. We have the kickstarter version, and as of now I have not played with the components from the base game, so I am unable to comment on them. Now, it should be noted that there are a couple versions of this game. Some of the text can be confusing when first encountered, but after enough game-plays the cards are all clear and easy to understand. Furthermore, a symbol in the upper right hand corner signifies if the card has a persistent effect or if it’s a one time use. The rest of the cards are split into two decks, clearly signified by either a coin or island symbol in the upper left hand corner. Each player gets a starting deck of 10 cards, signified by their background which corresponds to the player color. Extraordinary Adventures: Pirates is a deck-building game, so naturally the cards are an integral part of it. As always, YMMV, but it works for me even after my MacPorts copy is deactivated. The dependencies are taken from my machine whilst gimp2-devel is activated, and were copied from /opt/local/lib if they started with “libgimp” – so some may strictly be unnecessary. Download the below zipfile in addition to the plugin above, and put it somewhere permanent (here I’ll assume you’ve put it in your home folder). So, here’s how to do it, if the plugin above does not work for you on its own (in particular, crashing was reported in the comments). OK, solved it – dependencies are still not statically linked, but instead I’ve brought them in manually. I’ve found that my binary no longer works for me if I port deactivate the bleeding-edge version of Gimp accordingly I am having a dig about to see if the plugin can be compiled with dependencies statically linked. Whether this works on any given Mac probably depends on what libraries are installed in the system already. So, if you can’t find your plugin folder, open Edit->Preferences and get the location from Folders->Plugins. Tip: bear in mind that the binary install of Gimp puts the plugin folder in an odd place (i.e. Obviously, if it blows up your house or runs off with your credit card, don’t blame me. Simply download, unzip, drop into your “plug-ins” folder and restart if it’s worked you’ll get a new option at the bottom of your Filters menu. I attach a copy below, to save on duplicated hassle. I am not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I’m on OS X 10.6.8. So, this produced a binary, which works really well, on both my stable 2.6.x and my dev 2.7.x. Don’t try this at home if you can help it though: I think it took at least an overnight to compile, around 10 hours at least. Anyway I installed the bleeding-edge dev copy (version 2.7.1) via MacPorts, and this fixed the problem. So, it looked like the compiler needed a dependency but couldn’t find it (with hindsight I did wonder if it was available in the binary version, but just required the setting of a suitable path). This was on the same machine as a binary install of 2.6.10. To the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gimpui-2.0.pc' Package gimpui-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. But my attempts at installing it dissolved in a pretty shower of CLI errors (note: am pasting from the interwebs here, since I’ve now solved the problem and can’t easily get it to fail again): $ make install So, I needed to re-size all of them down to 40% to fit into Flickr’s bandwidth limit, and to achieve this fancied trying David’s Batch Processor plugin. Here’s my use case: I had 118 photographs in JPEG format, taking over 1GB, and wanted to upload them to Flickr. However, when it comes to building plugins, it gets a bit tricky. Now, on a Mac, the easiest approach to installing Gimp is to use one of the pre-compiled binaries available on the download page – version 2.6.x at the time of writing. On Linux it’s all I use for bitmap editing. Whilst it’s probably not quite Photoshop, it is well featured, powerful, and (as far as I can recall) stable. A case in point is processing photos, for which – of course – all free software fans should be using Gimp. Whilst I am warming to the “Mac way” of doing things, I do like making use of F/OSS where I can. Flot is also limited to line and bar charts. This gives you much more flexibility than other charting packages, but there is a steeper learning curve. The nice thing about Flot is that you have access to plenty of callback functions so you can run your own code and style the results when readers hover, click, mouseout, and other common events. It’s a jQuery library, so if you’re already familiar with jQuery, it’s easy to manipulate the calls back, styling and behaviour of the graphics. It works in all browsers that support canvas-which means most of the popular ones, with some extra libraries to get canvas to work as VML in older browsers. Flotįlot is a great library for line graphs and bar charts. The portion for static images has been deprecated, but the Google Chart API is a good way to create dynamic visualizations 4. As a jumping-off point, it is a great tool to know how to use. You will probably find the right visualization for your needs as long as you are comfortable with the Google look and not in need of extreme customisation. However, the API has just about everything but the kitchen sink, from bar charts and line graphs to maps and even QR codes. Static images didn’t have the same issues, so I’m sorry to see them go. They are robust and work on all browsers supporting SVG, canvas and VML, but one big problem is that they are generated on the client side, which creates problems for devices without JavaScript, offline use-or just when saving in different formats. The portion of the toolset for static images has been deprecated, so the Google Chart Tools site now only offers tools for dynamic charts. All of the following toolkits accept at least one of the two formats as input. You’ll need to understand their structures and how to get data in or out of them. CSV/JSONĬSV (Comma-Separated Values) and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) aren’t actual visualization tools, but they are common formats for data. This will get your familiar with what is possible before stepping off and using the API directly for your own projects. Google ‘eats its own dog food’, so the spreadsheet can generate the same charts as the Google Chart API. Nevertheless, as a means of rapidly communicating ideas, Excel should be part of your toolbox.Įxcel comes as part of the commercial Microsoft Office suite, so if you don’t have access to it, Google’s spreadsheets-part of Google Docs and Google Drive-can do many of the same things. As an entry-level tool, it can be a good way of quickly exploring data, or creating visualizations for internal use, but the limited default set of colours, lines and styles make it difficult to create graphics that would be usable in a professional publication or website. You can actually do some pretty complex things with Excel, from ‘heat maps’ of cells to scatter plots. Excel It isn’t graphically flexible, but Excel is a good way to explore data: for example, by creating ‘heat maps’ like this one If you deal with visualizations every day, you’ll quickly find yourself advancing beyond them, but not everyone will, so you’ll always be dealing with data coming in from sources you’d rather not deal with. If you are just getting started, these tools are musts to understand. You might not think of Excel as a visualization package, for example-but it’s capable of surprisingly complex results. Entry-level toolsĪt the entry level, we’ll be looking at unexpected uses for familiar tools. Almost everything here is available for free, and some you have probably installed already. In this article, I want to introduce you to 20 different tools for creating visualizations: from simple charts to complex graphs, maps and infographics. Beyond following blogs, you need to practise-and to practise, you need to understand the tools available. One of the most common questions I get asked is how to get started with data visualizations.
